Wedding couple embrace at sunset in Sun Valley

Sun Valley Idaho Wedding at Roundhouse

Amy Isacson March 17, 2025

Natalie & Chase

It was a warm, summer day when I first met Natalie and Chase in McCall for their engagement session. Natalie and I waited on the dock while Chase motored over on his family’s boat. It was here that we connected in the warm breeze, on beautiful Payette Lake, the pretties lake I know. Head to the link of my IG post from that most lovely day. We had such fun! I will always have an affinity for my couples who opt to jump in the lake during their sessions - any season! The conversation was easy, the love was SO evident and I really felt a great connection with them both.

I definitely hoped that further down the line I’d have the honor of documenting their wedding day…

Well, the stars aligned and my dream came true. Their wedding day was nothing short of spectacular! They chose to get married on top of Bald Mountain on the deck of the beautiful historic Roundhouse, built in 1939. Perched on top of the Express Gondola in Sun Valley at 7700 feet, this historic building has amazing panoramic views of the Sawtooth mountains. Their wedding was easily the coldest wedding I’ve shot, though the amount of LOVE that day more than eclipsed the -19 degrees (with wind) we experienced! And that alpenglow - just wow!

They each got ready at different locations and my super talented second shooter (Sage) helped me make it all happen. Sage was with Chase and his guys. I was with Natalie and her ladies.

My favorite part during this time was when Natalie was getting her hair + makeup done alongside her mother. These are the moments I imagine to be the most special.

Natalie had a first-look with her Dad, at the base of the gondola. It was super sweet, and a moment I’m sure they both will treasure forever.

Chase took some reflective time on his ride up the gondola ahead of them, reviewing his vows. I especially love this moment of calm before the festivities of their wedding began.

Once at the top of the mountain, the couple had their first look and it was cold and windy, and adorable.

Their ceremony was held outside and absolutely beautiful. String lights were hung from the stately tree, serving as a lovely backdrop. Candles lined the aisle and it was the dreamiest time.

Inside, the old stone fireplace was roaring through dinner and toasts, and everyone enjoyed good food, great music, heartfelt toasts and cheer.

The evening finished up following a ride back down the gondola to River Run Day Lodge for a full-on dance party. Natalie changed dresses and the night continued on with the utmost happiness! An absolutely amazing time, in every way!

The 29 Top Wedding Venues in McCall, Idaho and How to Choose ONE

Amy Isacson January 17, 2025

So you’re looking for the perfect place to get married and you’ve narrowed it down to the mountains. Just 90 minutes north of Boise, McCall is the perfect choice. Now what!? Love McCall, but not sure where to tie the knot?

I’ve got you!! As a local and a wedding photographer, I’ve put together a list of my favorite wedding venues, both simple and for the more adventurous.

Many couples are opting to elope instead of the traditional wedding. Either is a good choice!

The mountains are glorious any season, and each has different offerings. From the fresh scents of spring to the long clear days of summer, to the lovely colors of fall to thick snow in the winter, it is always a feast for the senses.

DATE

Choosing your wedding date is a big decision, and often hinges on which places are available and realistic.

GUEST COUNT

In addition to deciding what season, the number of guests is a big consideration. The maximum guest count at each venue is included in my list below, when applicable.

ACTIVITIES

Are you adventuresome and want to elope on the top of a mountain? That’s easily done and there are plenty to choose from! If this is your jam, I can guide you and have some tips below.

If you’re thinking the lake is calling and you’d like to tie the knot near the water, there are countless beautiful spots to consider. There are SO many tucked-away gems, which are lesser known, and as your photographer, I’d be happy to take you there!

Payette Lake Wedding - McCall, Idaho

Payette Lake Wedding - McCall, Idaho

Wishing for a more traditional mountain lodge-type wedding venue, there are several to choose from, some right in town and others further out in the backcountry. Ranches and historic barns abound around here. We even have clean and modern Scandinavian!! There are so many - in such breathtaking locations - it’s honestly tough to pick. Fortunately, it’s not a bad problem to have.

Here are 7 TYPES OF VENUES to consider when planning your outdoor wedding/elopement in McCall

Each type of wedding venue is then broken down into specific locations, with links to each location -

  • Lake / Beach / Waterfront

  • Mountains

  • River

  • Hot Springs

  • Historic Landmarks

  • Traditional

  • Clean + Modern

All have spectacular views and most enjoy easy access and parking as well and are set up to accommodate your celebration.

LAKE / BEACH / WATERFRONT

Ponderosa State Park - Easy to access and ample parking, this incredible 1000 acre park peninsula is surrounded by Payette Lake, and has everything to offer. From sandy beaches, forested lakeside trails, a meadow marsh to the top of Osprey overlook. There are covered picnic tables near the lake, along with camping and super sweet lakeside cabins for overnight guests.

Pilgrim Cove Camp - This 12-acre camp overlooks Payette lake, including beach access and dining setup. (up to 135 guests) Blog post from a recent wedding here soon to follow!

Shore Lodge - Historic elegance and accommodations, Shore Lodge is well known to anyone who’s been to McCall - famous or otherwise. It features an amazing spa and restaurant, right in the heart of town, with lake access and accommodations, plus catering. It falls uniquely in two venue categories - both waterfront + historic landmark. See this lovely wedding I photographed there not that long ago. Looking for some zen, serenity and the ultimate in relaxation? Take advantage of a spa, massage, and private hot springs at The Cove right at the lodge. I treated my husband to a Christmas gift this year to The Cove and take it from some first-hand experience, it is AMAZING!!

The Glass House - one of the newest venues in town, situated near the lake, this architectural gem is connected with Hotel McCall. Guests can both stay and enjoy smaller gatherings in this lakeside gem, a short walk to downtown.

Paradise Point Camp - Growing in popularity, this sweet camp fills up quickly!! There are several locations for your ceremony, with incredible lake views. The Outdoor Chapel of the Holy Spirit is just one, along with a lakeside campfire area, which boasts seating for 125. Host up to 250 along the private picturesque sandy beach. Evening receptions are delightfully spent on their large dining hall deck, under the brightest stary nights we know and love. Delicious meals are provided on-site by their fabulous catering services. Blog post from a recent wedding here soon to follow!

North Beach - Off the beaten path, but nonetheless amazing, this locale at the north end of Payette Lake has deep sandy beaches, river access and sometimes a moose spotting! Definitely more for the adventurous bride and groom!

Private homes - If you’re lucky enough to know someone who has a home right on the lake, then consider yourself lucky enough! Check out this wedding a private home right on the lake at Sylvan Beach, on the west side of Payette Lake.

CLEAN + MODERN

Scandia Inn - One of the best-kept secrets (and not-so-secret anymore!) is this clean and well-appointed local gem - complete with 17 beautiful Scandinavian-themed rooms. It offers a spacious yard, along with smokeless firepits. This mountain modern space is a superb canvas for those hoping for a bit more modern and sophisticated look. See my blog post from a gorgeous wedding I recently shot here.

Ultimately, choosing a wedding venue is a big decision and impacts the course of your day. Often it is the first part of the wedding planning puzzle that directs the course of your big day. Take time to do your research. There are plenty of people who’ve been in your shoes and are willing to share their knowledge. Wedding planners, florists, and photographers all have great insight. Reach out to them! If you book me as your photographer, I have a complete vendor list I’m happy to share with you. Local knowledge goes a long way! Contact me HERE.

Think of it as a fun project - and reach out to others. Clearly, central Idaho has plenty of wonderful options. By picking the time of year, the number of guests, the type of wedding venue and reading over this list, hopefully you are that much closer to making your final decision!

Clean and Elegant Wedding Inspiration at White Barn Weddings - Emmett, Idaho

Amy Isacson April 11, 2024
Wedding Couple (Copy)
Bridal Inspiration in Cowboy hat (Copy)

This clean and minimal elopement aesthetic was inspired by the sleek lines of White Barn Weddings and Venue in beautiful Emmett, Idaho. Our editorial was driven by the desire to celebrate elegance and luxury, complete with neutrals and creams, and a slight nod to western refinement.

5 FACTORS IN CREATING OUR VISION

VENUE

  • We had a lot of ideas floating around but not until the venue and Addie’s gown from Laneige Bridal in Boise were secured, did all the parts fall into place. The WHITE theme permeated throughout; the goal was to stay true to the clean and crisp lines of the venue and gown, and highlight all aspects of the luxurious feel inside.

NEUTRALS

  • We used a neutral palette to enhance not only the surrounding beauty of the venue and countryside, but to also compliment the striking splendor of Addie and Tyler. After all, the day was centered around the two of them!

ELEGANCE

  • All the details, including the gown, jewelry, shoes and florals, were centered around a simple beauty that is timeless and classic. Addie’s pearl gloves brought a more elegant touch to her look, and of course, having her hair down beautifully executed by Trend Studios provided a more whimsical and carefree feel.

FLOWERS

  • The full ceremony arch was a celebration of springtime florals, with plenty of whites and textures, with the goal of further enhancing the surrounding natural beauty, and supporting the classic features of the couple.

GLASS

  • The elevated table settings complimented the light and airy feel inside the barn reception area, complete with candles, cream linens, glass, gold and reflective surfaces. Victoria of House of Salem Events absolutely crushed it with her vision here - she was hugely instrumental in procuring our vision. The custom place cards included a stylized horseshoe emblem thanks to Penned Creations, a small homage to the barn and rural setting. The delicious cake was buttercream with gold leaf, simple and striking.

Creating your dream wedding day is no simple task. There are as many ways to make it come to life as there are couples getting married. Working with vendors who really get your vision is key in creating a wedding day that truly speaks to you.

As a wedding photographer, this day was especially fun because it was the culmination of ideas I have wanted to execute for some time. Including wedding vendors allowed us to create a collaborative vision - all within the clean and elegant parameters. Of course, Addie and Tyler were the absolute best in participating enthusiastically and perfectly!

Shore Lodge Lakeside Wedding in McCall, Idaho

Amy Isacson February 24, 2023
Sunset Bride and Groom on Dock

Maureen and Ben envisioned a classic and natural wedding at Shore Lodge, set on the south side of beautiful Payette Lake in McCall, Idaho. It was nothing short of spectacular, as the weather Gods delivered picture perfect weather.

Shore Lodge

Shore Lodge is one of McCall’s top wedding venues, for good reason. This historic resort has been around since 1948 and offers Idaho mountain luxury at its finest. By its pure proximity to the lake and being right in town, it’s easy to see why many couples call it their absolute dream venue. Not only is it ideal for couples hoping to tie the knot with incredible lake and mountain views, it also offers high-end amenities. With lodging, banquet rooms, massage offerings, spas, hot springs and restaurants on site, it has everything a couple looking to get married could possibly need!

One of my favorite spots at Shore Lodge is The Cove. You can get full massage packages which include access to their private hot springs and their two heated saltwater immersion pools. Romantic date tip = book a couple’s day here! Think experiences over things, always. I gifted this to my husband at Christmas last year and we had such fun. SO decadent!!

Because Shore Lodge provides a full-service wedding venue, there is no guesswork in creating your dream wedding day. The staff is fully equipped to cater to all needs for couples planning their wedding, from day of coordinators to fully catered delicious meals.

McCall Lake Cruises

Maureen and Ben did it all right. They kicked off their wedding destination weekend with a rehearsal dinner aboard the Payette Lake cruise boat, The Idaho, enjoying dinner and drinks surrounded by their closest family and friends. McCall Lake Cruises offers a variety of cruise options and two levels of boat goodness. The upper level is open and the lower level is a bit more protected. They provide cocktails and dinner, while cruising around the lake. I cannot wait to shoot a wedding aboard this boat this coming summer. Stay tuned!

Following their day out on the lake, Maureen and Ben got ready at Shore Lodge itself and the beauty and energy was absolutely wonderful. Weddings at this magical spot are always on point. They opted to have all photos and celebrations near Shore Lodge or nearby on Payette Lake.

First Look

Maureen and Ben’s first look out on one of the docks was super touching and their supportive bridal party was one of the best out there! Their vendor team was superb; it was fantastic working alongside my fabulous associate shooter, (Sage Donnelly Imagery) and the super talented videographer (Films by Aly). She came all the way from Utah and was an absolute delight. I really enjoyed my time alongside the entire team that worked together to make this day so spectacular.

Details

There was no shortage of wonderful details too. A champagne wall and signature drinks offered to guests provided just the right festive and personal touches. For him: Jack and Coke, and for her: Huckletinis with fresh local huckleberries!

From their wedding vows in the banquet hall surrounded by the pristine lake and mountains, to their reception and dance party, it was truly a day to remember! As always, I am so grateful to be able to witness these monumental moments. I am not just there to photograph love, I am there to celebrate it. And what a fantastic celebration it was!

A big congratulations to Maureen + Ben!

Luxury Wedding at Scandia Inn - McCall, Idaho | Miso + Travis

Amy Isacson February 9, 2023

Scandia Inn

Miso and Travis picked the Scandia Inn as their destination wedding venue in McCall, ID for very good reason. These days, Scandia is the IT spot for couples with its ideal amenities. Scandia has undergone a fantastic transformation from its original look in the 1970s as Finish homesteaders style mountain ski cabins to what is today. It definitely maintains that mountain cabin feel, yet boasts high-end finishes and luxurious bedding which is a welcome to our little town. It’s a smaller venue, with that small-town feel yet high end class. The new managers, Jess and Aaron, are super friendly and accommodating.

Wedding Vision

When Miso and Travis reached out and described their vision, I knew their day would be indeed special and their wedding was my EXACT vibe. As an Idaho wedding photographer, I see a lot of different wedding styles. This past year especially, there was a wide range of venues and visions! That’s also what I enjoy so much about what I do. I don’t really know what I’m in for until I show up on the day of. Sure, there is a lot of back and forth with my questionnaire and I have an overall sense of the look, but that feeling when arrive and go ok now I get it! This is what it all has been leading up to is honestly one of the most fun parts of my job. I get to capture every part of it. From the small details, to the simple interactions and the big moments!!

Miso and Travis envisioned their day at Scandia Inn to be modern, clean and simple, I knew I’d be in for a treat. And indeed I was! As a first-generation Korean-American, Miso wanted to incorporate her heritage into their wedding. Her mother wrote a touching letter to her in Korean which was also translated into English. She also wore a beautiful traditional red Korean hanbok and looked absolutely stunning.

They were determined to do it all themselves (she did her hair + makeup effortlessly while chatting with her bridal party). And they were committed to having a good time. Miso sent over a timeline that was super organized and I so appreciated. We sorted out the details together and decided to include a separate location for the first look. The only thing I had to come up with was a fun first-look location. The day ended up being very hot and it snowed the following week! Mountain weather - go figure! They were such troopers. I encouraged them to bring a change of shoes and they were like yeah, no. So we hiked around the rocks in the heat and did our beautiful thing.

Details

They had a very small and intimate wedding and invited about 50 family and friends. Every detail was absolutely perfect. Guests dressed in their finest black attire, as did the wedding party; giving it a cosmopolitan feel. The ceremony took place on the lawn adjacent to Scandia, below the towering pine trees. Travis comes from a very large family and his dad was the officiant. One of my favorite photos from the ceremony was immediately after Travis had walked up to the alter and was facing his dad, awaiting Miso to walk down the aisle. The two of them were talking to each other, father to son, as Travis was about to marry his bride.

My other favorite moment was immediately following this private father-son moment, when Miso walked down the aisle with her mother and father. The look on Miso’s face says it all. So emotional!! Their wedding ceremony was beautiful and heartfelt.

Miso knew she wanted a white rose petal tossing after their first kiss. It was fabulous to see them get absolutely blanketed with them!!

Once the sun began to set, the string lights criss-crossed the lawn and were aglow and the candlight inside the lodge set the scene for a clean reception space, complete with a white-washed brick wall. White florals, lovely place-settings and clean everything. The first dances were especially touching, and after Miso and her dad danced, there was not a dry eye in the house.

Reception

The reception dance party was a blast, and I always love the cut- loose time at weddings. I stole Miso and Travis away for a few final outside shots before the sun officially set. These casual, blurry shots may well be my favorite of all. It depicts a happy duo, relaxed and carefree. They are finally married and SO IN LOVE.

We finished things up with a sparkler exit back where it all began under the big tall trees. A beautiful day and night, in all ways.

Scandia Inn set the stage for this couple to celebrate this momentous day in the most glorious way. I am honored to have been witness to the love story between Miso and Travis. If you ever want to do it right in the heart of beautiful McCall, ID - THIS is the place. I look forward to returning to Scandia Inn again this next year!! x

As always - so grateful for my couples who trust in me. Love you, Miso + Travis.

Rustic Idaho Western Wedding at Longhorn Guest Ranch | Stephany + Andrew

Amy Isacson November 2, 2022
SA-0064.jpg

Have you ever dreamed of getting married in the mountains surrounded by horses and cattle? Well, the spectacular setting at Longhorn Guest Ranch fit the bill for Stephany and Andrew and set the stage for one of the most amazing days ever!

If you’re looking for some fun wedding inspiration not only from the venue perspective but for super touching traditions, keep on reading…

Stephany and Andrew met at work in September of 2016. He was in the same position as she and was the person who ultimately taught her how to do her job. They started out as just friends, occasionally grabbing a beer or two after work or going out to the pool hall with friends. They officially began dating on Christmas of 2017.

On Christmas morning in 2020, Stephany had one final present to open from Andrew. It was a medium-large sized wrapped box that had no weight to it and inside of that box was another wrapped box, and another, and another.

Finally, there was one remaining box left to unwrap and inside of that box was a set of instructions for a scavenger hunt which included the first clue. Each clue had a sweet note or inside joke that outlined our relationship and the fourth and final clue led her out to her car. From there, she was instructed to come back inside to warm up (while doing this all in her pj's).

When she got back inside and shut the door, she turned around to see Andrew on his knee holding a ring and asked, "Will you marry me?"

Then, in Stephany’s words, she “Ugly cried and of course, said yes!”

They chose to get married at Longhorn Guest Ranch, deep in the mountains of SW Idaho. It’s a fantastic venue with the perfect blend of natural beauty, friendly Longhorn cattle + Highland cows, a nice mix of horses and dogs and ridiculously cool old rustic buildings with just enough improvements to make them feel perfectly dressed up. As a working ranch, guests can interact with the cows and horses!

I always do a site visit ahead of my weddings and first visited Longhorn the week leading up to Stephany and Andrew’s big day and I can confidently say it is on top of my favorite wedding venues. The weather was incredibly gorgeous and the kindest owner, Victoria, took me on a scenic tour by quad. The entire venue encompasses 214 acres. Along the way, we soon realized we share a deep love for animals, and we happily rode around like two peas in a pod.

On their wedding day, Stephany got ready upstairs in the main lodge with the help of her mother and bridesmaids while Andrew got ready with his best men in one of the quaint rustic cabins.

WEDDING TRADITIONS

Below are some of the noteworthy wedding traditions they used, which included special personal touches:

  • Before putting on her boots, Stephany’s dad gave her a lucky penny to put in her boot!

  • Stephany had an extremely emotional first look with Andrew’s sons and read a super sweet not a dry eye in the house letter to them.

  • The bride and groom asked their grandmothers to be their flower girls and it was one of the sweetest things I have ever seen!! The granny flower girls later danced together at the end of the night.

  • Andrew’s son was ring security for the ceremony - with a special sheriff badge - making him extra official.

  • Both Stephany’s father and step-father walked her down the aisle, one passing her on to the other.

After the ceremony, we headed out to the pasture for photos with the super-friendly Highland cows, horses and Longhorn cattle. I was honestly in paradise! The trees and grass were green, there were blankets of purple flowers everywhere and we were surrounded by the stillness and these fabulous creatures. Hanging out with Stephany and Andrew was a blast - they were such fun and so easy to kick back with!!!

The final touching traditional element they incorporated was a money dance (set to the song Could I Have This Dance) in which the male guests - especially the little boys - paid to dance briefly with the bride, and the female guests - especially the little girls - paid to dance with the groom. It was adorable! Each held a little white bag to carry their loot.

To sum up, touching traditions, often with a fun twist, can really bring emotional elements to your wedding day. Here are my top 7 favorites from this most wonderful day:

  • Dad giving the bride a lucky penny for her boot

  • First look with her sons-to-be and a heartfelt message

  • Both grandmothers as flower girls

  • Groom’s son as the ring bearer wearing a sheriff badge, called ring security

  • In the case of both a dad and step-dad, having each walk the bride part way down the aisle

  • Bridal party donning shades as they exit

  • A money dance

There were countless other fun touches, but these really stood out to me. Details like these culminated in making this day that much MORE heartfelt.

By the end of the night, both young and old were cutting it up on the dance floor and the love between Stephany and Andrew was absolutely glorious. Once again, I am so grateful to get to document moments like these and am constantly blown away not only by the magical way true love originates but how it radiates in every way outwards.

Following all my weddings, I typically make a short Instagram reel set to music. There are some moments that need video and motion. In this case, I used the song they used for their money dance:

Stanley Idaho Wedding in the Sawtooth Mountains | Kelly + Jeff

Amy Isacson June 17, 2022
KellyJeff-0285.jpg

Ok guys. Brace yourselves for THE SWEETEST love story ever…

Nestled in the central mountains of Idaho lies the lazy little town of Stanley, where I was fortunate to photograph the loveliest wedding weekend of Kelly and Jeff.  They approached me with the idea of first hiking up to their favorite meadow in the Sawtooth Mountains to exchange their vows with their daughter, Charlie and their dog Jane. We did just that and our time spent together on this day was one of the most wonderful and most moving. It is here where I not only had the honor of witnessing their deep love but first got to really know this beautiful family. The love between Kelly and Jeff is immense. And their daughter, Charlie, is the sweetest girl ever, as well as a sparkling bundle of energy! Good thing I knew the words to the song The Wheels on the Bus… 😉 I was smitten by her charm from this point forward.

The backstory to Kelly and Jeff’s relationship is the real clincher -

Jeff and I met on a Grand Canyon river trip. By the end of the trip, we were head over heels. But I lived in Idaho and he lived in New York and I never thought it would work out. He came to visit me a month after the trip and three weeks later I found out I was pregnant.

Jeff moved to Idaho and we got to know each other as our baby grew. Neither of us was nervous about the fact that we barely knew each other and were having a baby together. We knew what we'd found in each other. We knew we'd found forever. Fortunately, we were right! Our daughter is now two years old and our family is so damn happy.

We spend our days outside as much as possible. Charlie went on her first river trip down the Middle Fork of the Salmon at 16 months. I say this not to brag but to show that our adventure didn't stop when she was born. It just got a bit more complicated and far more meaningful.

Charlie girl has Down syndrome, another thing that has shaped our relationship. We've discovered that the very best therapy for her is getting her outdoors.

We got engaged around the fire in our backyard on New Year’s Eve. I didn't see it coming, which was awesome. My favorite place to be is Stanley, Idaho. Jeff doesn't really have a favorite place. He's spent time sailing, lots of time on the river, time in small towns and cities and loves it all. He's an obsessive mountain biker and amateur carpenter and drummer (he's already teaching Charlie the drums...not sure how I feel about that). He is a salesman by profession and personality. I mountain bike to spend time with Jeff (though loving it more every ride) but love to run and am an amateur writer. I work in conservation with a focus on wilderness and that suits me just fine.

The next day, Kelly and Jeff prepared for a bigger celebration amongst family and friends. Kelly got ready at a super amazing Airbnb with epic Sawtooth views surrounded by her girl tribe. They doted on her and contributed to the preparations of the big day, from doing hair, makeup, flowers, childcare - you name it! Kelly wore her grandmother’s pearl bracelet and her hair partly up with flowers in it. An incredibly sweet detail was the copper cuff she wore, which had a topographic map of the Grand Canyon river where they first met and fell in love.

We ladies arrived fashionably late to an excited (and HOT!) group of family and friends. They had chosen a picturesque spot in the hills above Stanley, where Kelly’s brother was the officiant. Their intention for this day was RAW and EPIC. Indeed it was!! After a moving exchange of vows with a to die for backdrop of the Sawtooths, champagne was popped, family photos were taken and Kelly and Jeff hopped on their BIKES with a couple of friends and rode a few miles to town! I was adamant that Kelly stay in her wedding dress (and not change out of it for that part). She was glad she did!

We welcomed them as they rolled into town at the rustic and intimate Danner’s Log Cabins, where most of the guests were staying. These cozy cabins were originally Idaho’s first ranger stations back in the late 1800’s. They are situated in an L-shape, with a central grassy courtyard, right in the center of town - super easy to walk almost anywhere. The celebration went full swing once the newlyweds arrived.

They went for an autumn sagebrush theme, with colors that blended in with the landscape - lots of lavender, sunflowers and native plants. The tables had crisp white linen tablecloths with burlap runners, and small wooden rounds decorated with flowers and lights. The goal was a to create a high mountain bar scene. It was truly magical! The festivities were complete with drinks, dinner, fantastic music by Tylor and the Train Robbers, heartfelt toasts, a toasty campfire, lawn games, and a whole lot of love.

It was an absolutely perfect weekend in every possible way. I am so grateful to have witnessed a few epic days of this delightful union. Life ahead of this sweet family of 3 looks bright and beautiful! x

20 Tips for Couples in Getting the Best Wedding Photos

Amy Isacson March 8, 2022

If you are thinking of hiring a wedding or elopement photographer and want to be sure you get the best photos of your wedding day, there are some ideas worth noting. As a wedding photographer myself with a good backlog of weddings under my belt, there are a handful of things that can help in getting the very best out of your experience.

Wedding photographers have a wide range of styles, pricing, availability and personalities. It is worth taking the time to do your research. (Sometimes, couples choose to hire a friend or family member, which is absolutely fine. The old adage, you get what you pay for rings true here like anywhere else; tread lightly and know exactly what you’re getting if you decide to go that route.)

If you have made a decision to hire a wedding photographer, I applaud you because you are well underway to having your dream day well documented.

Consider these 20 tips to help you get the most out of your wedding photographer and best possible wedding photos -

1. ENGAGEMENT PHOTOS

Engagement Session
Engagement boat session
Snowy engagement session

This is your chance to get to know us and gain a mutual rapport.  Think of it as getting to know your new best friend.  In most cases, we will be in the room with you getting ready, watching you experience one of life’s most momentous days, and documenting your love.

Doesn’t it make sense that we have had some connection before the actual wedding day?

Plan a date with your loved one!  Date nights are always fun and why not get some photos of you having a good time?!  Plan a fun activity, or just revel in each other’s company.  If you are on the fence, it definitely is worth the extra time and money.

Consider using engagement photos as:

  • Save the date announcements

  • Wedding invitations

  • Decor for your actual wedding - framed and on display

Pro tip - If you plan to hire someone to do your hair and makeup (and don’t forget nails for rings), consider hiring them for your engagement photos. It’s a great chance to do a trial run for your big day and see how it all looks in photos and confirm it’s precisely how you want it on your wedding day!

2.  WEDDING VENUE

Probably the biggest wildcard when planning a wedding or elopement is where to do it!  You can burn hours making this decision.  If you’re wanting an actual wedding venue instead of on the top of a mountain, plan ahead.  Right now, next year’s wedding schedules are well underway and vendors are already getting booked! Your wedding or elopement photographer will be glad to assist you. Generally, they take a bigger role when the ceremony will take place out in nature. Pick a wedding photographer that is an expert in the area you choose. It really pays off to have a pro lead to you to the most epic locations, not only for the photos but for the overall experience. Think of it as your own personal tour guide. Most are thrilled to be able to help determine the outcome of the images and the setting plays a crucial role in this. Include them, if possible. Your photos will be that much richer!

If you are considering getting married or eloping in Idaho, I wrote a blog about the top Idaho wedding venues near McCall here.

Most couples choose a place that has special meaning or beauty that speaks to them.  If you are using a wedding venue, smart photographers will visit your the venue ahead of time (if possible) and scope out ideal spots for photos, taking into account backdrop, weather and lighting.

3.  WEDDING PLANNER / TIMELINE ASSISTANCE

Wedding planners or day-of coordinators are an invaluable resource and hands down make your day more relaxing, more special, more enjoyable.  They are experienced in what works and doesn’t work.  They have creative ideas and resources.  Utilize them! Often people imagine having a relative or friend doing this, but it is way more realistic to hire an expert who does this for a living. It’s one of the best investments you can make towards a successful day.

I have witnessed hands-down that anytime a wedding planner is involved, the wedding immediately falls into the A+ category. I know several wedding photographers that won’t even shoot a wedding if a planner is not involved. It is a monumental thing to consider, truly bumping up a wedding to a higher-end affair.

Part of the job of your wedding photographer is to help create a realistic timeline. If a wedding planner is not involved, definitely work in conjunction with what your photographer recommends in terms of timing. They know the best time for good light and locations and will optimize your schedule so it works best for this.

Have you considered a stylist? This investment absolutely impacts the overall elevation of an image - someone is actually there to make sure the fashion looks great.

4.  VENDOR ASSISTANCE / FLORALS

Florals? Always.  Always.  Everything becomes more special with flowers, whether simple or ornate.  You can make your day that much more special when you incorporate nature’s garden into all aspects of your day. Don’t skimp on florals. They really enhance the feeling and mood of your day and are a worthwhile investment.

Pro tip:  The camera catches everything.  If you are considering fake flowers or greenery, don’t.

In addition to florists, wedding and elopement photographers generally have vendors they enjoy working with. Once my couples book with me, I provide them leads on vendors from florists, catering, music, etc.

5.  ARBORS

As the focal point of your ceremony, your backdrop deserves thought and planning.  There will be plenty of photos of you in front of it and it’s worth you making it really spectacular.  People are getting super creative these days about this, and the opportunity to create something unique AND beautiful awaits.  Family and friends want to help; this is a fabulous opportunity to put them to work.

6.  PAPER GOODS

If you opt to send out invitations, consider the texture of paper, the style of the font and of course any colors or graphics.  Even the stamps you use can be creative!  The entire package is visual and we photographers love to get every visual piece that we can!  Don’t forget to send an invite including the stamped envelope or better yet, set one nice one aside (without the postmark) for your photographer to document on your wedding day, along with other details.

7.  DETAILS

It may seem odd if your photographer asks you to set aside some simple things for detail shots. I suggest setting a shoebox aside with things such as invitation suites, handwritten vows or letters, florals, cufflinks, shoes, jewelry, rings, sentimental items (family heirlooms), perfume, and anything that’s important to you for detail shots.  These images are simple captures artistically created to adding to the complete story of your day. They may be things you might quickly forget in the future, yet shots like these compliment all the people and venue photos you will receive.

They are the first thing I work on when I arrive, and creating these flat lays allows me to begin the process of opening the window into the documentation of your day.

Fun fact: These are not only simple pieces that make up your big day, but detail shots are most sought after when submitting a wedding for publication.  Magazines typically want 25% the couple + 75% details!  If the wedding warrants it, I always encourage my couples to consider allowing me to submit their wedding for publication.  It’s a fun bonus when it gets accepted!  Of course, it’s YOUR day and keeping it private and exclusive to you is absolutely your prerogative.

8.  TABLESCAPES

Tables are a fantastic opportunity to show your wedding theme and style!  Settings, food and cake delight the palate as well as the eye.  Food is art.  The creativity here is endless.

Weddings have all budgets and I’m just as honored to document a fancy wedding with gold-rimmed china or simple picnic style elopement.  The only caveat here is PLEASE avoid paper plates, plastic utensils + plastic cups!!  They don’t photograph well, they are horribly wasteful / harming the environment and appear like they were an afterthought.  Please consider either renting or purchasing (thrift store) dishes - you will be glad you did!  Glass jars for drinks work just fine and photograph so much more nicely than red plastic cups!

Wedding Tablescape
Wedding Table

While we’re on the subject of tables, consider an in-loving memory table.  Here you can display photos of loved ones who we wish were sharing in our day - these are wonderful tributes to deceased family members.

Other ideas for tables are:

  • Gift table

  • Guest book

  • Scrapbook table

9.  BRIDE FOR THE DAY

Embrace being a bride!!  Getting married is a monumental thing and it’s up to you to create the best experience possible.   Recruit helpers!! Whether you hire someone or you ask your sister, they want to help out!  If the budget allows it, pamper yourself.  If you feel good, it shows.

Things made better with extra help:

  • Hair

  • Makeup

  • Manicure / Pedicure

  • Massage

Celebrate YOU. Pre-wedding boudoir sessions remind you to celebrate yourself - in your prime, showing how vivacious you truly are! Further down the line, they show a confident, sexy woman at a monumental time in her life. They make you feel empowered. They make a fabulous gift for your partner. The experience of posing in front of the camera in this way gives the bride-to-be a deeper trust of being more comfortable in front of the camera on her wedding day. And what better reason of all - an excuse to go lingerie shopping!!

Bridal portraits are also worth considering. Often couples plan for these so the bride can wear her gown several months in advance (or another unique outfit) in a special place that is entirely different from where they actually will get married. There is so much happening on the actual wedding day, this allows the bride to be relaxed, fun and creative.

10.  WEDDING PARTY

Along with the wedding comes your family and friends who have been with you through thick and thin.  This is your chance to include them in your wedding day milestone.  If you have bridesmaids (and groomsmen) you’ll be getting ready together so fun celebratory activities are ideal.  Robes and bubbly with bridesmaids are popular and make for great photo opportunities.  Popping champagne is always a win.

Toasts: If you want to have toasts during your reception, plan ahead. Ask the folks who you want to give a toast ahead of time so they have time to prepare. Limit the toast to 3-5 minutes. Finally, have the speakers stand near you so your photos capture both your reactions to the toasts as well as them giving the toast!

11.  PERSONALIZED SIGNAGE

From large signs with your names and date on them, to small ring boxes, to the custom words on the soles of your shoes (!),  to a personalized cake topper, to reminding your guests you’re having an unplugged ceremony - signage in all shapes and sizes shows your personality.  Get creative!

Wedding Dessert Table

12.  UNPLUG

Many perfect shots are totally ruined when a guest is in view with their phone out (also) photographing the day.  They are an unnecessary distraction and something the bride and groom have complete control over.  We photographers are there with our cameras so your guests don’t need one.  If you opt for an unplugged ceremony, not only will you be happy with the end results of your wedding gallery, you will feel confident your guests were actually present and in the moment, fully experiencing your day.

Pro tip:  Be sure to have the groom and wedding party put their phones away and not just in their hip pocket.  The outline of a phone in the pocket of the groom or other groomsmen is an easy thing to avoid if you plan ahead. Handing your phone over to a good friend for a bit means you might be in for some surprise of shots after the fact!

13.  PETS

If the venue allows it, include your pets.  They are just as big a part of your day as family members and friends.  Everyone loves photos of animals, plus it’s a fun opportunity to add a festive element to them!

Wedding Dog

14.  KIDS

Think like a kid!  Some venues are more kid-friendly than others.  The most unscripted life moments involve kids.  They are your photographer’s best friend.  They are hammy, playful, willing to run around and make motion.  Make a point to include them in your day if you can - you won’t regret it!

Kids make adorable wedding participants including:

  • Ring bearers

  • Flower girls

15.  MOTION

Simple moments are wonderful and definitely serve a purpose.  Motion shows life, energy and bring excitement to images!  Good photographers will keep an eye out for all things moving and be ready to capture that once-in-a-lifetime shot.

16.   LIGHT

Reception lighting is often overlooked and cannot be emphasized enough! It is perhaps the biggest influence in the mood of your evening. Candles and string lights make a wonderful soft warm vibe. Keep in mind warm vs cool lights. Sometimes venues and dj’s offer colorful lights and as tempting as they are (especially blues/purples/reds) can really affect skin tones and make people look way off in the final photos. Of course, sometimes that’s the look you might be after; just be ready for a lot more wild and jazzy!

The camera loves light and reflection.  If you want to add some magic to your day, the more glitter you can add, the more likely you’ll achieve it.

Consider things like:

  • Bubbles

  • String lights

  • Mirrors

  • Silver

  • Gold

  • Candles

  • Windows

  • Lights

  • Sequins

  • Sparklers

Pro - tip: Lots of couples are building a nighttime portrait session into their wedding day. By opting to go to completely different spots, you can get a more gritty look and using the flash and achieve totally different vibes from the traditional portraits!

17.  BE UNIQUE

Consider doing something different that’s true to you.  I had a bride this past summer who was totally down to get into the river in her wedding dress, after her ceremony. See their full wedding day here. It’s your wedding or elopement day.  Do something that is YOU and you’ll look back and be glad you did.  You only live once!

18.  GOLDEN HOUR

The sky is a marvelous thing.   The sun, the clouds, the atmosphere.  I ALWAYS encourage my couples to consider sneaking away for golden hour shots.  When we create a timeline, we work backward so we can be sure to incorporate this special time when the light truly becomes magical and turns golden, blue, then dark.

19.  SENDOFF

There are numerous ideas for send-offs; your wedding day is YOUR day so live it fully!  Pinterest is an excellent way to get some ideas for this. You don’t have to wait till the very end of your celebration for a sendoff. It can happen anytime. Have your guests throw some flower petals as you walk down the aisle after saying I DO! It really bumps up the enjoyment of the moment makes for livelier images.

Check out the bride below who rode off on her bike in her wedding dress right after their ceremony. Read their full story here as they rode off from a mountain top in Stanley down into town to their waiting friends and family.

Some creative sendoffs include:

  • Flowers

  • Rice

  • Bubbles

  • Sparklers

  • Cars

  • Horses

  • Human Tunnels

20.  ALBUMS + PRINTS

Living in the digital age, we have come to expect everything digitally. Your special day begins to feel less than special when all you have after your big day is digital files to look at on your phone or computer. Trust me. It’s easy to say you’ll print them in the future. More often than not, this time in the future never happens. Please consider printing them and making albums soon! Better yet, recruit the expert that’s been working with you the whole way through to work their magic on the finished product; they have a vested interest in it! Long after your day is over, you will be glad you made the crossover to tangible keepsakes.

Throughout history, families have savored those tangible memories passed down through generations. By printing your photos and creating an heirloom album, you are contributing to your family’s history. This is the beginning for generations to come, a witness to your early years, to be enjoyed by you, your kids, and grandkids.

Leather Wedding Album

If you’ve already put a considerable amount of money into your wedding or elopement, you can certainly save money by creating a wedding album yourself. Consider having the photographer who took your photos make your wedding album. They should have ample experience it this and it’s the final part of your photographer’s involvement in your wedding day. Good wedding photographers have access to printing companies the general public doesn’t. Fine art books are not cheap. Preserving one of the most important days of your life in a tangible form should be made with good materials, ideally museum-quality archival paper, nicely bound, with a high-quality cover (I use leather or linen.)

Often couples I work with get a 12 x 12 size for themselves, and as thank you gifts to their families, smaller companion albums. In this case, there should be a quantity discount. Delivering your album is almost as fulfilling as the day itself for me. I actually have a separate page in my website dedicated entirely to wedding albums. Ask your photographer about creating a wedding album - you will be glad you did!

McCall Idaho Barn Wedding at Historic Roseberry | Rikki + Darrell

Amy Isacson November 4, 2021
Just Married at Barn

Rikki and Darrel chose to get married in the historic town of Roseberry, Idaho.  It was an absolute dream to document.  A lot of planning went into making it so special and the attention to detail really paid off.  The weather forecast called for an 80% chance of rain, though I only felt a couple of sprinkles the whole day!  The weather gods favored us kindly, and the day got progressively more beautiful.

The details throughout the day were exceptional and it was evident a lot of time and effort went into each aspect of their day. From custom soles of her shoes (“Mrs. Cobb”") to the cake topper, it was such fun to witness! They also worked with a wedding planner (McCall Weddings) and it absolutely pushed things up a notch!

We had done engagement photos prior so I already had a connection with them and was eager to watch them tie the knot! If you are on the fence about engagement photos, they are absolutely worth it! This is your chance to get to know your photographer and gain a mutual rapport.  Think of it as getting to know your new best friend.  In most cases, we will be in the room with you getting ready, watching you experience one of life’s most momentous days, and documenting you sealing the kiss with your partner.

The love and connection between these two was one of the sweetest I’ve had the fortune of documenting. Their wedding took place on the grass facing the pasture of cows with the mountains in the background; pretty idyllic. They had their reception in the historic red barn with music and string lights, which really created a magical feel.

The earlier overcast gave way to the most spectacular sunset and of course, I was thrilled to get them out into the field for a few sweet moments together, sealed with a kiss.

Says Rikki about their day:

The smell of the old wood, the twinkle of all the little white lights, the huge double barns doors that open to a mountain view, cows in the pasture just beyond the arbor.   It was a rustic setting with a romantic feel!   We utilized the indoor barn for the reception and the outdoor lawn for the ceremony. Guests had the option to explore other historical buildings onsite before the wedding or during the reception.

Another reason for choosing this location, my husband’s son and daughter-in-law were married in the same barn 8 years earlier. Also, it just so happened to be available on our 2 yr dating anniversary.

The history of the barn itself is an interesting story, being over a 100 years old. Imagine all the stories that that old barn holds.  Well, I just added my story to it!

McCall Idaho Wedding in the Country at Ranch View Venue | Bethany + Jason

Amy Isacson October 1, 2021
Bride and Groom

Are you considering a country wedding in the mountains of Idaho and not sure where to begin? Look no further than Ranch View Venue, in beautiful New Meadows, a 15-minute drive from McCall, Idaho. The wedding of Bethany and Jason was a wonderful example of how some simple details, along with a whole lotta love, can make a profoundly beautiful wedding day!

They chose Ranch View Venue and it was absolutely spectacular. She did all the planning and design and her attention to all the details was impressive. Check out his striking tie, the surprise message on the bottom of his shoes, and their unique send-off at the end!

Going for a Bohemian theme, they went with fall jewel colors to compliment the setting. Bethany wore some greenery in her hair, with lovely, loose curls and that bouquet - created by her good friend Hannah of Ethereal Floral - was to die for! I always ask my brides to text me a picture of their dress, so I have the real vision going into their day. When she shared it, I was floored. It was amazing - I mean. HOW. GORGEOUS! She chose a creamy white dress from Sarabeth Bridal and it was absolutely stunning with lace flowers cascading down the train.

A little back story on them -

Bethany and Jason had known each other pretty much their entire lives, but we were in different groups of friends, so they never spoke much. A few months after graduating from high-school, she became friends with one of his friends, who invited a group of them to go to a haunted house. Afterwards, they were wandering around the corn maze together and started talking. During this time, she began to realize she was developing a crush on him.

She actually tricked him into their first "date"! About a week after the haunted house, she told him she had invited a group of people to explore some nearby caves but never actually did, only inviting him. She asked him if he could drive her because her car was in the shop (which it was not) and that she needed a ride. When he picked her up, she told him that nobody could make it and it was just going to be the two of them. They continued to go on more dates after that and after 4 years together, they finally tied the knot.

Jason is a jewelry designer at Portsches Fine Jewelry and lovingly created BOTH of their incredibly stunning rings. How cool is that?!!

One fun thing Bethany felt strong about was to have a first look with her dad - and my, was it ever touching! We set it up at the airbnb they were staying at and it went perfectly.

She followed up with a first look with Jason at Ranch View. First looks are definitely a big thing to consider when planning your wedding and timeline and are not for everyone. More and more, though, couples are opting for first looks so they can have one on one time together before the day starts moving at a swifter pace. It allows them to slow down and be present with one another. And this time allows for couple portraits without the pressure of eager guests. It’s calm and intentional, with just the two of them. Often the wedding party and family get photos taken together at this point. Typically, immediately following the ceremony it becomes more complicated to round up the wedding party and family members, as a receiving line naturally forms once the couple is married. Having the bulk of obligatory photos done ahead of time is an easy way to have it out of the way before the ceremony even begins!

Bethany and Jason opted for an unplugged ceremony and I cannot stress the gravity of this enough! There’s nothing worse than having photos of people holding their phones ruining your wedding gallery. Not only are they a huge distraction from the final results, but when you chose to have your day unplugged, you know your guests will be fully present in the moments of your day. It is a monumental thing to consider!

The setting of Ranch View Venue and the surrounding countryside was absolutely wonderful. It was my first wedding here and I will definitely be raving about it to future couples. A few months ago, I wrote a little blog about top wedding venues near McCall, ID (and how to pick one) here and I included it in my list. Now that I’ve shot a wedding there, I absolutely recommend it to anyone considering a country wedding with a barn and lots of good, classic ambiance. The newest owners, the Kautz family, are super nice and accommodating. The original barn was built in 1891 with a rich agricultural history. It is surrounded by horses and cattle and fields for miles. They’ve done a wonderful job outfitting the barn to really compliment wedding festivities, including a dance floor in the center and a little dressing room in one corner.

Our Idaho sky put on her best show that night and was beautifully highlighted by the bubble send-off given by their family and friends. Long after they’d left, the guests were still lingering, literally hanging on the fencelines - watching the incredible sky show finale that punctuated the end of a perfect wedding day.

Wallowa Lake Oregon Wedding near Joseph | Kelsey + Doug

Amy Isacson September 24, 2021
Mountain Wedding

When a bride who is also a florist (Evelyn Frances Floral Design) reaches out to you to photograph her wedding, you know the stars have already aligned in your favor. Kelsey was one such bride. Based out of Portland, OR, she and Doug wanted to get married at his parents’ property overlooking the Wallowa Mountains, near Enterprise, Oregon.

I was fortunate enough to find a room at the Jennings Hotel in nearby Joseph, OR. I had been eyeing the progress of this historic 1910 brick building for years, and was stoked that this place on my bucket list was actually going to become a reality.

It was WAY cool!

The owners have done a hands-down spectacular job of renovating this corner building right on downtown Main St. Joseph, Oregon is a super fun town - I highly recommend it. I definitely will be bringing my family back with me next time! Bonus points were earned by the fact that I had shared common space with others in the hotel (Covid restrictions applied) and met some friendly guests both nights on my way back to my room, one of whom was another guest at this “AMAZING” wedding, as she exclaimed!

Kelsey and Doug turned out to be the absolute sweetest couple EVER, including me in their welcome BBQ at Wallowa Lake the night before their big day. It was a good opportunity to meet everyone, and we even got to witness Coho Salmon spawning in the river nearby!

Originally planning to use her mother’s crocheted dress and going for a Priscilla Presley look, there was some drama in the alteration dept. and Kelsey ended up needing to find an alternative. She found her forever dress at Brides for a Cause and it was absolutely stunning on her! If you are ever on the hunt for a wedding dress in Portland, Tacoma, Seattle or Sacramento, check them out. Such a novel idea - they collect and resale wedding dresses for women-focused charities!

On the day of their wedding, the weather forecast was for rain so we hoped for the best. We got their first look photos just fine, but by the time we were doing family portraits, the wind had picked up and everyone’s hair was being blown in every direction. It was pretty comical!

We next went to Wallowa Lake to get some couple shots of just Kelsey and Doug and those may just be my favorite ones from their big day. The light was perfect, and the time spent with just the two of them, delightful.

Kelsey hoped to get some shots with 9’s, their old man horse friend, so we headed over to the ranch and got what we could before it really started to rain.

On the way back to Doug’s parent’s house, we stopped for a quick porch shot at the Hurricane Creek Grange, where Doug’s grandmother had been a founding member. It was a sweet moment.

We got back to the house, enjoyed some downtime as the storm really blew in the rain came down. The view of the Wallowa mountains disappeared and we could see nothing. His mom lit the woodstove, and we all hunkered down. As sudden as they appeared, the clouds drastically moved on and the sun came out delivering the most spectacular view of the SNOWY Wallowa Mountains in the distance. I yelled “Kelsey, come see the SNOW on the mountains!!” and she was equally thrilled, sharing that Doug had been hoping this would happen. The first snow of the season!

Sure enough, everything looked brilliant. Family and friends rushed to wipe the water off the chairs, and the boys carried the arbor that Doug built and Kelsey decorated up to the front (watch it happen here!) The view was spectacular! That just-rained cleanse filled the air, and the wedding geared up full steam. It rolled outright without delays, along with Doug’s Auntie playing piano and their heartfelt vows exchanged. Doug’s dad was the perfect officiant. It was the first time I’ve heard toasts while the wedding party was at the altar - of which there were some super heartfelt ones by the BRIDE AND GROOM as well as the guests.

Their day was just perfect in every possible way. The next day, I drove back home to Idaho with a heart overflowing, having witnessed some kind of wonderful as well, knowing I had made some new best friends by the name of Kelsey and Doug. ❤️

* Update - I just had to share this sweet message from Kelsey:

Oh Amy! I just love how you captured our day. Thank you so much for this beautiful blog post! We are thrilled with your photos and feel so lucky to have been able to work with you and get to know you. You were absolutely the perfect fit for us! We are so grateful.

Salmon River Wedding

Salmon River Idaho Wedding | Nicole + Mike

Amy Isacson August 25, 2021

The backstory of Nicole and Mike was recently published in How They Asked, a subsidiary of The Knot magazine. As skydivers, they met back in 2016 and have a rich history, which culminates in falling in love.

I jumped into the picture when I asked if they’d be down for a snowy couples photoshoot in fancy clothes. Yes, they were!! Quite possibly the most touching session to date, Mike proposed to an unsuspecting Nicole, complete with snowshoes and on one knee. Read about it here.

They opted for a weekend celebration with their family and friends, staying at the River View Cabins along the Salmon River, not far from where Nicole grew up.  Renting a jet boat,  Mike kicked things off in proper celebratory fashion by catching a 7 ' 10" sturgeon!  (fish photos, not mine)

IMG_20210725_141415_665.jpg
IMG_20210725_141415_804.jpg

Their wedding day was perfect and HOT - with 100 degree temps, pretty true to Hells Canyon summers.  Their amazing community came together to create a most beautiful, heartfelt day.  Nicole was escorted down the aisle by her beautiful daughters, where she and Mike exchanged vows beneath an amazing arbor designed by her sister, in the shade of trees, with the Salmon running swiftly behind them.  Check out her amazing ring by Michellia Fine Jewelry - a large Austrailian boulder opal surrounded by diamonds!  Sweet details such as feather fly lures on Mike's and their officiant's hats, along with vibrant feather bow ties were super creative touches.  And the band the Dusty Huckleberries played some great music, pretty ideal for dancing along the river...

Around sunset, Nicole was totally down for a dip in the river IN HER WEDDING DRESS.  Mike was game, too!!   Their love was radiant and their adventurous energy completely contagious.  A truly amazing day!  ❤️

Watch the rad video of their wedding here!

Tamarack Resort Idaho Vow Renewal | Allison + Scott

Amy Isacson July 15, 2021

Allison and Scott had eloped last June on the ridge of Hum Lake outside of McCall, but due to Covid restrictions, their family was not able to join them. This June, they planned a family weekend to do a vow renewal and dinner party at beautiful Tamarack Resort and reached out to me to photograph it. Little did I realize what an incredibly sweet couple (and family!) I was in for!! We hit it off immediately, and after a lot of back and forth in hopes of riding the chairlift up, we found the perfect spot for them to exchange their vows, with sweeping views of the valley and lake. True to our Idaho summers, the day was HOT.

Scroll to see my first ever Gif, as well as a perfectly timed photo-bomb at the end of a local, who drove past us, complete with classic car and husky! 🐕 We found it rather fitting, considering the dog lovers amongst us!!

After the ceremony, we headed back down the mountain for some reception fun and got a few photos with their adorable dog, Lou, a Pudelpointer, an old German hunting breed. I was smitten by him and he totally took the show! Everyone should have a dog like Lou. Everyone. 🧡

If you are considering including your dog in your day, DO! Know that I’m totally down for it - they are part of the family. You won’t regret it!!

We got everyone in the grand entrance to the rental, which was fun with the double stairwell. It was a tight squeeze since I couldn’t get the door to get completely open without taking it off the hinges (which my husband would probably do!) but it worked.

Allison arranged for a little maternity session for her pregnant sister, Emily, and her husband Matt, to document this sweet season, before their baby arrives in August. They, too, had a dog, named Gary (did I mention this family not only has rad dogs, but also GREAT dog names?!) who inspired Allison and Scott to get Lou. Needless to say, Gary, also won me over. Big time!!

Zion - Elopement

Zion National Park Utah Desert Elopement | Lisa + Tino

Amy Isacson May 18, 2021
Zion-0366.jpg

Ever since we visited Zion National Park a few years back, I’ve been eager to return. This recent trip reminded me that Utah is indeed a special place and its beauty is hard to beat. It is no secret that there is a lot to see, and with some creativity as well as assistance from the All-Trails app, you can find your own slice of paradise to say I do in. The popular spots are favorites for a reason; they ARE truly amazing. With a little effort, though, you can find plenty of places that are just as epic, if not more so, with little or no crowds. The harder-to-reach places successfully weed out the crowds. As always, be respectful of this precious land and follow the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace.

If you’re determined to tie the knot in true solitude with incredible views, it takes some preparation and is worth the effort.

Lisa and Tino were dressed to the nine and up for anything. The overlook views of the canyon were incredible. We pinched ourselves at our luck in being in this special place. Jacqueline, our planner/coordinator tipped us off about this area, and after some location scouting, we knew we had found something special. We really hit the jackpot. (A couple of jeep tours pulled up while we were there, so it wasn’t as secret as we thought.) Fortunately, we were given our space and cheered on as they went on their way. There even were some dried hot pools nearby.

Lucky us, we had views for miles and perfect rocks to perch ourselves upon to soak in this magical world. Lisa and Tino exchanged their handwritten vows on top of some rocks, then laid on the rocks and looked up to the sky. They finished by dancing and embracing as the setting sun set her crown aglow, giving everything an ethereal feel. We all felt the immense power of this place and savored our time together in celebration of this beautiful day.

Ben gives Amber an impromptu piggy back ride as they enjoy their elopement day.

McCall Idaho Winter Elopement | Amber + Ben

Amy Isacson December 31, 2020

New Year’s Eve is always a good reason to celebrate, and after this past New Year’s, my favorite way to spend it is in the divine company of two people in love and eloping! It was an inward journey for me as well as them; focusing on this special day for these two that will forever be the day they got married.

When Amber and I first spoke on the phone, she made it clear to me that they wanted this day to be purely about the two of them. They wanted something simple and deeply meaningful where the focus was on their love for one another. This day was just that.

Amber and Ben are the owners of Watkins Pharmacy in Cascade, right in the center of town. They had their ceremony at Ben’s house in Cascade, where they got ready, he courted her on guitar and they exchanged vows with just the officiant and Amber’s hair and makeup stylist, Yolanda.

Ahead of time, we discussed a number of possible activities after the ceremony, as the weather became increasingly a major component to consider (hello, dumping snow!) In the end, they decided to head up to Blackhawk on the Lake to a beautiful home for some fun western vibe/amazing stone fireplace shots and then finished up with some fun tromps in the surrounding area.

One thing many people don’t realize is when the snow is thigh-high and there one lane is plowed, you can’t just park on the road. There needs to be pull-out parking and walking ANYWHERE becomes an issue because you need areas that are plowed or else you’ll look ridiculous standing in the deep snow. This all required considerable scouting which I was happy to do!

In the end, this day was definitely one for the books. The love between these two was so evident when they looked at one another. We could all feel it. I loved that they made their elopement day all about them. And I am so grateful to have been asked to be a part of it!

We took a pretty rough unplowed side road to get to Blackhawk on the River following the ceremony in Cascade. At one point, there was a car approaching us in the same single tire tracks our two vehicles were following. We all slowed down at an intersection and were able to successfully pass each other! Ah, mountain life!! This frosty heart below formed on my windshield as I followed Amber and Ben on that memorable drive. That blurry form is the newlyweds ahead of me…

Alisha and Matt focus on time alone as the sun begins to rise over the Pacific Ocean.

California Coastal Elopement | Alisha + Matt

Amy Isacson November 23, 2020

I can’t really imagine anything more enjoyable than a sunrise session with these two lovebirds! It’s always a win to have creatives enthusiastically collaborate on a vision you have in your mind and watch it unfold.

Our shoot was centered around an amazing handmade reclamation dress by Trista Smith out of Canada for Reclamation. Her garments are absolute masterpieces!

When determining the location, we wanted something that would be complementary, yet not compete with the focus on Alisha and Matt. Sharkfin Cove, a few miles up the coast from Santa Cruz, was the winner, with the opportunity to shoot up on the cliffs as well as down by the water. If you’ve never been, it’s very much worth the visit!

Alisha and Matt both have gorgeous warm coloring and it was with this in mind that my gal Katie at Susi’s Flowers created the exact vision I had - light colors of peach and cream florals. We added a handmade gold necklace by Mountainside Made Jewelry and a hat by Urban Outfitters.

Lucky for me, this rad couple was down for anything and I SO appreciated their can-do attitude - whether it was getting up at 5:30 to shoot in the brisk morning air, popping the champagne for mimosas or hiking down to the beach to frolic in the water. They are as good as it gets and the sweetest (did I mention, most photogenic?!) couple you’ll ever find.

Forever grateful to Matt and Alisha for making my vision come to life! 💫

Freshly married Jacob and Amber in the Aspen grove behind her parent’s backyard in McCall, Idaho.

Amber and Jacob

Talk about the MOST. PERFECT. COUPLE! These two were absolutely the sweetest and most down to earth duo! Amber knew exactly what she wanted and she had the perfect vision right down to every detail. The original plan was for a much bigger wedding, but as Covid would have it, things were downsized some. We had also originally planned for photos at the lake before the wedding, but after seeing Charlie’s Garden, a local secret and incredibly beautiful garden nearby, Amber knew that’s where she wanted the first look, and family shots to be. Lately, life is more full of changes than we anticipate, though, and in the end, their day was exactly as it was meant to be! Just perfect!!

It was a lovely 89 degrees and sunny. From Charlie’s Garden, we headed over to her mother’s stunning backyard, where the ceremony and reception were held. Things were set up beautifully! Her brother was the officiant, and their families and their wedding party were welcoming and loads of fun! At dusk, we snuck away and took a few family shots in the open space behind Amber’s mother’s yard, including her adorable kids, Hunter and Hadlee. Once the sun went down, the string lights lit up the garden and made for a truly magical place. The great familiar hits from DJ Ian Willams totally set the stage for an incredible night to remember. I was thrilled to be able to document this beautiful union between Amber and Jacob, who by everyone’s assessment - were destined for one another. 💫
